Stop Wasting Time on Your Cybersecurity Hiring Search – Focus on What Really Matters
Let’s be honest – finding great cybersecurity talent is tough. But instead of getting caught up in an endless resume hunt, I’ve found it’s better to focus on the qualities that truly indicate someone will excel in the role.
Here are the top five traits I look for when building my security team:
-
They can explain complex stuff simply – The best security pros can break down conditional access or incident response in a way that makes sense to everyone, from the CEO to the newest intern. They use real examples, not buzzwords, to get their point across. If they can’t explain it, skip it.
-
They show, don’t just tell – Look for people who pull up a whiteboard to sketch out their ideas or jump into a demo environment to prove their point. This hands-on approach shows they truly understand the concepts, not just the theory.
-
They solve real business problems – Great candidates don’t just recite textbook solutions – they ask questions about your business needs and suggest practical approaches that actually work in the real world. They know perfect security often isn’t practical security.
-
They know their stuff (but aren’t show-offs) – They’re comfortable with the tools and terms of the trade, especially core platforms like Microsoft 365. But they use their knowledge to help others understand & mentor, not to make themselves look smart or overwhelm their audience.
-
They prove their worth – While good security talent isn’t cheap, the best professionals more than pay for themselves by preventing costly incidents, streamlining processes, and keeping systems running smoothly.
Bonus trait: Here’s a pro tip that might seem obvious but is worth mentioning: make sure your security staff actually enjoys working with people. I’ve seen too many places hire the stereotypical gruff, antisocial security guard, and it never ends well. If a candidate struggles to hold a basic conversation during the interview or gives off strong “I hate everyone” vibes, keep looking. You need security professionals who can communicate effectively and genuinely want to help others. Trust me, the right person is out there – someone who brings both the skills and the people-friendly attitude your organization needs.
Quick Tips for Better Interviews:
-
Ask them to walk you through specific cases they’ve dealt with. You want to hear real examples – not just vague statements like “We did this…” Look for detailed stories about actual situations they’ve resolved and value they’ve provided. A good candidate should be able to share concrete examples that show how they tackled challenges and got results.
-
Ask them to break down technical concepts for team members who aren’t as tech-savvy. It’s crucial that they can explain things in plain English, without all the jargon.
-
Pay attention to how flexible they are – do they stick to one way of doing things, or can they shift gears when the business situation changes? You want someone who can read the scene and adjust their approach accordingly.
Remember: The best security pro for your team might not be the one with the most certifications – it’s the one who can actually solve your problems.
